size="1">【说明】本周所选的两篇小说原作者都是塞林格,实质上它们是同一篇小说的不同中文译本。但是大家也都知道,翻译,是一种再创作,无论译者多么忠实原作,总是不免多多少少减灭了作者一部分的原意,加上译者本人的理解,因此,从技术、中文文法的角度,我们可以认为这是两个作者的同题小说。用同题小说作比较的方式提问,兴许在技术上能使我们对小说的理解更为直观。</font></p><p><font 快三点钟了,玛丽·珍妮才好不容易找到了埃洛依丝的家。玛丽对到车道上迎接她的埃洛依丝解释说,一切都极为顺利,在她找出梅里克大道之前,她一直清楚地记得路线。埃洛依丝说:“梅里特大道,乖乖。”她提醒玛丽·珍妮她以前曾两次找到过这所房子。玛丽·珍妮只是含糊其词地抱怨着什么,大概是她那盒科里内克斯牌的擦面纸,然后又奔回到她那辆活动顶棚的汽车旁。埃洛依丝翻起了驼绒外衣的领子,转身背对着风等着。玛丽·珍妮很快就回来了,拿着一张擦面纸擦着。她那样子仍显得有些烦乱,脸色甚至可以说很难看。埃洛依丝乐呵呵地说那该死的午饭全都烧糊了--牛杂碎等所有的东西--但玛丽·珍妮说反正她在路上吃过了。两个人朝房子走去,埃洛依丝问玛丽·珍妮怎么正巧这天休息。玛丽·珍妮说不是整天休息,只是因为韦因博格先生得了疝气,呆在拉契蒙特的家里,她只好每天下午把他的邮件送去,再按他的口述,写几封回信。她问埃洛依丝:“说真的,疝气到底是什么?”埃洛依丝把烟扔在她脚下的污雪上说,她也说不清,不过玛丽·珍妮用不着太担心她会得这种病。玛丽·珍妮唔了一声,两个姑娘进了屋。<br /> 二十分钟后,她们在起居室里一边聊着天,一边喝着她们的第一杯掺了苏打水的威士忌酒。她们谈话的方式很独特,也许这种方式仅限于大学同宿舍之间。而在她们之间则有着更牢固的纽带;两个人谁也没念完大学。埃洛依丝二年级只念了一半就离开了大学,那是在1942年,当她同一个士兵在宿舍三层的电梯里被人抓住的一个星期以后的事。玛丽·珍妮则在同年,而且几乎是同一个月离开了同一个班,去和一个驻扎在佛罗里达州杰克逊威尔市的航空军校学员结了婚,那个小伙子来自密西西比州迪尔城,瘦瘦的,满脑子想着航空。他同玛丽·珍妮结婚的三个月中,有两个月是在监狱里度过的,因为他用刀子捅了一个宪兵。<br /> “不过,”埃洛依丝说。“其实是红色的。”她平伸着躺在睡椅上,两条瘦瘦的,然而又很秀气的腿搭在一起。<br /> “我听说是金黄色的,”玛丽·珍妮重复道。她坐在一张蓝色的椅子上。“那个人--他叫什么来着?--又打赌又发誓,说是金黄色的。”<br /> “呵呵,错不了。”埃洛依丝打着呵欠。“她染头发的时候,我几乎是就在屋里和她在一块儿来着。怎么了?那儿一支香烟也没有了吗?”<br /> “没关系,我有一整包呢,”玛丽·珍妮说。“就在这个里头。”她在自己的手提包中摸索着。<br /> “这个糊涂用人,”埃洛依丝说,她躺在睡椅上没动。“大约一个钟头以前,我把两条新的没动过的烟扔在她跟前。说不定什么时候她就会进来问我,这些烟该怎么办。我刚才到底说到哪儿了?”<br /> “西尔林格,”玛丽·珍妮点燃了自己的一支烟,提醒她说。<br /> “噢,对了。我记得清清楚楚。她在嫁给那个福兰克·亨克的头天晚上染的头发。你还记得他吗?”<br /> “有点儿记得。小小的二等兵?相貌很是平庸,对吗?”<br /> “平庸。天啊!他就像没洗过澡的贝拉·卢戈西[①]。”<br /> 玛丽·珍妮往后一仰,大笑起来。“妙极了。”她说着又恢复了原来喝酒的姿势。<br /> “给我你的杯子,”埃洛依丝说,她两只穿着长筒袜子的脚一悠,荡落到地板上,站起身来。“老实说,那个呆子。我什么办法都用了,就差让路易去跟她偷情,好让她跟我们到这儿来。现在我真后悔我--你那个东西是哪儿来的?”<br /> “这个么?”玛丽·珍妮说着,用手摸了摸颈前的一枚浮雕宝石饰针。“我上学的时候就有了,你知道。这是我妈妈的。”<br /> “我的天,”埃洛依丝说道,两只手里拿着空杯子。“我就没有一个神圣的鬼玩意儿可戴的。如果路易的妈妈死的话--啊哈--她可能会给我留点标着她姓名头一个字母的旧碎冰锥[②]之类的东西。”<br /> “怎么样,你近来跟她相处得如何?”<br /> “别开玩笑了,”埃洛依丝一边往厨房走一边说。<br /> “这绝对是我最后一杯了!”玛丽·珍妮在她背后喊道。<br /> “鬼话。谁到谁这来了?谁来晚了两个小时?你就给我呆这儿吧,没到我厌烦你的时候你别想走。让你那个讨厌的事业见鬼去吧。”<br /> 玛丽·珍妮又仰面大笑起来,而埃洛依丝则已经走进了厨房。<br /> 玛丽·珍妮一人留在屋里无所事事,便站起身走到窗前,撩开了窗帘,手腕搭在窗框上,觉得有砂子硌,便抽回手,用另一只手把砂子掸掉,然后挺直了身子站着。窗外,可以看到半融化的污雪又开始上冻了。玛丽·珍妮放下窗帘,朝那把蓝椅子走回去,当她经过两个装得满满的书柜时,对那些书的名字连瞥都没瞥一眼。她坐下来,打开手提包,用小镜子照照牙齿。又闭上嘴,用舌头使劲舔了舔上边的门牙,然后又照了照镜子。<br /> “外面真是冰冷冰冷的,”她说着转过头来。“天哪,这么快呀。你没放点苏打水吗?”<br /> 埃洛依丝两只手里各端着一杯刚刚兑好的酒站住了。她伸出两个食指像两个枪口一样,说道,“谁都别动,我已经把这个鬼地方包围了。”<br /> 玛丽·珍妮笑着把镜子放到一边。<br /> 埃洛依丝端着酒走上前来。她把玛丽·珍妮的杯子很不稳当地放在杯托上,而把自己的留在手里。接着,她又平伸着身子躺在了睡椅上。“你猜她在那里干什么呢?”她说。“她在那儿读《长袍》呢,她那个大黑屁股正坐在椅子上。我拿冰块盒的时候,盒子掉到地上了。她还恼火地抬起了头看着。”<br /> “这是我最后的一杯,我说话算话,”玛丽·珍妮说着拿起了她的杯子。“哎,听着,你知道我上礼拜看见谁了吗?在洛德·泰勒公司大楼的正厅?”<br /> “唔--,”埃洛依丝说,她把头下的枕头整了整。“阿吉姆·塔米罗夫。”<br /> “谁?”玛丽·珍妮说。“他是谁?”<br /> “阿吉姆·塔米罗夫。电影里的。他总是说,‘你开了个大大的玩笑--哈?’他太可爱了。……这屋里没有一个鬼枕头我能用。你看见谁了?”<br /> “杰克逊。她正--”<br /> “哪个杰克逊?”<br /> “我不知道。就是那个和我们一起上心理学的,总是--”<br /> “两个都和我们一起上心理学。”<br /> “唉,就是那个特别--”<br /> “玛丽亚·露伊丝。我有一次也碰上她了。她总是跟你说个没完。”<br /> “没错,就是她。可你知道她跟我说些什么吗?怀汀博士死了。她说她收到巴巴拉·希尔的一封信,说怀汀去年夏天得了癌,然后就死了,就那么完了。她死的时候,只有六十二磅重。你说可怕不可怕?”<br /> “不可怕。”<br /> “埃洛依丝,你变得越来越冷酷了。”<br /> “唔,她还说了点什么?”<br /> “噢,她刚从欧洲回来。她丈夫也不知是驻扎在德国还是在哪儿,她和他在一起。她说他们有一所四十七间屋子的房子,只和另外一对夫妇同住,还有大约十个用人。她自己的马原是希特勒的,还有他们的马夫原是个希特勒的什么私人骑术教练。噢,对了,然后她开始跟我说她是怎样差点被一个有色人种的士兵强奸了。她在洛德·泰勒公司的大楼的正厅里就开始说给我听。你是知道杰克逊这个人的。她说这个人是她丈夫的司机,有天早上开车带她去市场还是什么地方。她说她当时吓坏了,甚至都没--”<br /> “等会儿。”埃洛依丝抬起了头,提高了嗓门。“是你吗?莱莫娜?”<br /> “是,”一个小孩的声音答道。<br /> “请你把前门关上,”埃洛依丝大声说着。<br /> “是莱莫娜?噢,我太想见见她了。你知道吗,我好久没见过她了,自从她得--”<br /> “莱莫娜,”埃洛依丝喊着,她双眼闭着,“到厨房去,让格莱丝把你的套靴脱了。”<br /> “好吧,”莱莫娜说。“来吧,吉米。”<br /> “噢,我太想见见她了,”玛丽·珍妮说。<br /> “噢,我的天哪!看我干了什么。真太对不起了,埃尔。”<br /> “别管它,别管它,”埃洛依丝说。“反正我讨厌死这个鬼地毯了。我再给你拿一杯。”<br /> “不用,你瞧,这还剩下一多半呢!”玛丽·珍妮举起了杯子。<br /> “是吗?”埃洛依丝说。“给我一支烟。”<br /> 玛丽·珍妮把她的烟盒递了过去,嘴里说道,“噢,我太想见见她了。她现在长得像谁?”<br /> 埃洛依丝划了一根火柴。“阿吉姆·塔米罗夫。”<br /> “别开玩笑,说真的。”<br /> “路易。她长得像路易。他妈妈来的时候,他们三人就像三胞胎一样。”埃洛依丝也不站起身,伸着手去移烟桌那头放着的一摞烟灰缸。她够到了最上边的一个,拿来放在自己的肚子上。“我需要的是一只西班牙长毛狗什么的,”她说。“一个像我的人。”<br /> “她的眼睛现在怎样了?”玛丽·珍妮问。“我是说她的眼睛没怎么往坏发展吧?”<br /> “是啊,没往我想的那种坏里发展。”<br /> “她不戴眼镜能看见吗?我是说如果她晚上起来上厕所什么的?”<br /> “她不对别人说。她有的是秘密。”<br /> 玛丽·珍妮在椅子上转过身来。“喂,你好,莱莫娜!”她说。“噢,好漂亮的衣服!”她放下了杯子。“我敢说你都不记得我了,莱莫娜。”<br /> “她当然记得。这位女士是谁,莱莫娜?”<br /> “玛丽·珍妮,”莱莫娜说完,用手挠着自己。<br /> “真了不起!”玛丽·珍妮说。“莱莫娜,亲我一下好吗?”<br /> “别挠了,”埃洛依丝对莱莫娜说。<br /> 莱莫娜不挠了。<br /> “亲我一下好吗,莱莫娜?”玛丽·珍妮又问。<br /> “我不喜欢亲别人。”<br /> 埃洛依丝用鼻子哼了一声,然后问,“吉米哪儿去了?”<br /> “他在这儿。”<br /> “吉米是谁?”玛丽·珍妮问埃洛依丝。<br /> “噢,我的天,她的男朋友。她上哪儿,他就也上哪儿。她做什么,他就也做什么,全是胡闹。”<br /> “真的呀?”玛丽·珍妮很感兴趣地说。她往前倾了倾身。“你有个男朋友吗,莱莫娜?”<br /> 莱莫娜的双眼被一副厚厚的近视镜片遮住了,她的眼神对玛丽·珍妮的兴趣没有丝毫反应。<br /> “玛丽·珍妮问你话呢,莱莫娜,”埃洛依丝说。<br /> 莱莫娜把一个手指伸进她宽宽的小鼻孔里。<br /> “不许抠,”埃洛依丝说。“玛丽·珍妮问你是不是有个男朋友。”<br /> “有,”莱莫娜说着,还不停地抠着鼻子。<br /> “莱莫娜,”埃洛依丝说。“你给我住手。马上住手。”<br /> 莱莫娜放下了手。<br /> “噢,我看那太好了。”玛丽·珍妮说。“他叫什么?能告诉我他的名字吗,莱莫娜?这也是一个大秘密吗?”<br /> “吉米,”莱莫娜说。<br /> “吉米?噢,我喜欢吉米这个名字!吉米什么,莱莫娜?”<br /> “吉米·吉美里诺,”莱莫娜说。<br /> “站着别动,”埃洛依丝说。<br /> “噢,这倒是个不一般的名字。吉米在哪儿?能告诉我吗,莱莫娜?”<br /> “在这儿呢,”莱莫娜说。<br /> 玛丽·珍妮往四处看了看,然后看着莱莫娜,微笑着,尽量显得很动人。“在这儿的什么地方,亲爱的?”<br /> “就是这儿,”莱莫娜说。“我牵着他的手呢。”<br /> “我不明白,”玛丽·珍妮对快要喝完酒的埃洛依丝说。<br /> “别看着我呀,”埃洛依丝说。<br /> 玛丽·珍妮又转过来看着莱莫娜。“噢,我知道了。吉米只是一个假设中的小男孩。太妙了。”玛丽·珍妮亲热地往前倾了倾身。<br /> “你好吗,吉米?”她说。<br /> “他不会跟你说话的,”埃洛依丝说。“莱莫娜,给玛丽·珍妮说说吉米。”<br /> “给她说些什么呢?”<br /> “你站起来好不好。……告诉玛丽·珍妮吉米长得什么样。”<br /> “他有一双绿眼睛和一头黑发。”<br /> “还有呢?”<br /> “他没妈妈,也没爸爸。”<br /> “还有呢?”<br /> “没有雀斑。”<br /> “还有呢?”<br /> “有一把剑。”<br /> “还有呢?”<br /> “我不知道了。”莱莫娜说着,又开始用手挠自己。<br /> “这么说他太美了,”玛丽·珍妮说,她坐在椅子上,身子倾得更向前了。“莱莫娜,告诉我,你进来的时候,吉米也脱掉他的套靴吗?”<br /> “他穿靴子,”莱莫娜说。<br /> “太妙了,”玛丽·珍妮对埃洛依丝说。<br /> “你就想想吧,我整天都得受这一套。吉米和她一起吃饭,一起洗澡,一起睡觉。她睡在床的紧边上,生怕滚过去把他压着了。”<br /> 玛丽·珍妮显得很快乐,看样子她被这些事情吸引住了。她咬了咬下嘴唇,然后又放开,问道,“他这个名字是哪儿来的?”<br /> “吉米·吉美里诺?天晓得。”<br /> “也许这条街有哪个小男孩叫这名字。”<br /> 埃洛依丝打了个呵欠,摇了摇头。“这条街上一个小男孩也没有。根本就没小孩。别人都管我叫多产的范妮--”<br /> “妈妈,”莱莫娜说,“我出去玩行吗?”<br /> 埃洛依丝看着她。“你不是刚进来嘛,”她说。<br /> “吉米又要出去了。”<br /> “为什么,能告诉我吗?”<br /> “他把他的剑落在外面了。”<br /> “噢,他和他该死的剑,”埃洛依丝说。“好吧,去吧。把你的套靴穿上。”<br /> “把这个给我吧?”莱莫娜说着,从烟灰缸里拿起一根燃过的火柴棍儿。<br /> “应该说请给我这个好吗?好吧。别到街上玩,听见没有?”<br /> “再见,莱莫娜!”玛丽·珍妮有腔有调地说。<br /> “再见,”莱莫娜说。“走吧,吉米!”<br /> 埃洛依丝猛地站起身。“给我你的杯子,”她说。<br /> “不喝了,真的,埃尔。我这会儿应该在拉契蒙特才是。我是说韦因博格先生待人非常好,我不愿意--”<br /> “打电话就说你死了。放开那个该死的杯子。”<br /> “不了,真的不了,埃尔。我是说外面冰冻厉害极了。我车里几乎什么防冻剂也没有。我是说如果我不--”<br /> “让它冻去。去打电话,说你死了,”埃洛依丝说。“给我。”<br /> “那……电话在哪儿?”<br /> “飞了,”埃洛依丝说,她拿着空杯子向饭厅走去,“这--边--走。”走到起居室和饭厅之间的一块地板上时,她突然站住了,扭动了一下髋骨,身子往前一蹦。玛丽·珍妮咯咯地笑了。<br /> “我是说你不真正了解沃尔特,”埃洛依丝说,此时正是五点一刻。她仰面躺在地板上,一杯酒稳稳地立在她那乳房扁小的胸上。“他是我所认识的唯一的能逗我发笑的男孩。我是指真正地笑起来。”她向玛丽·珍妮望去。“你还记得那天晚上吗--就是咱们的最后那一年--那个发了疯的露伊丝·赫尔曼穿着一件她在芝加哥买的黑乳罩闯进屋的时候。”<br /> 玛丽·珍妮咯咯地笑着。她面对着埃洛依丝,趴在睡椅上,下巴枕在扶手上,杯子放在地板上伸手就能拿到的地方。<br /> “是啊,他能那样逗我发笑,”埃洛依丝说。“他和我讲话时能让我发笑,打电话时能让我发笑,甚至他写的信也能让我发笑。而最妙的是,他并不是故意要显得那么滑稽。他本来就是那么滑稽。”她把头稍稍转向玛丽·珍妮。“嘿,给我扔根烟过来?”<br /> “我够不着。”玛丽·珍妮说。<br /> “你这家伙。”埃洛依丝又看起天花板来。“有一次,”她说,“我摔倒了。我有一阵总在汽车站等着他,就在陆军消费合作社的外面,一次,他来晚了,正好车刚开动。我们就追这辆车,结果我摔倒了,崴了我的脚腕。他说:‘可怜的维格利大叔[③]。’他这是指我的脚腕。他管这叫可怜的老维格利大叔。……天哪,他太好了。”<br /> “路易没有幽默感吗?”玛丽·珍妮说。<br /> “什么?”<br /> “路易没有幽默感吗?”<br /> “噢,天!谁知道呢?有吧,我猜是有。他看了漫画之类的东西都会笑。”埃洛依丝抬起了头,举起了放在胸上的杯子喝了起来。<br /> “那呀,”玛丽·珍妮说。“那算不得什么。我是说那算不得什么。”<br /> “什么算不得什么?”<br /> “噢,你知道。发笑什么的。”<br /> “谁说算不得?”埃洛依丝说。“听着,如果你不想做个修女什么的话,你最好也笑。”<br /> 玛丽·珍妮咯咯地笑了起来。“你真太可怕了,”她说。<br /> “噢,天啊,他太好了,”埃洛依丝说。“他不是那么滑稽就是非常温柔。可不是那种讨厌的小毛孩子的温柔。这是一种特殊的温柔。你知道有一次他干了什么吗?”<br /> “说吧。”玛丽·珍妮说。<br /> “我们在从特伦顿到纽约的火车上--他正好刚被征去当兵。车厢里很冷,我把我的外衣搭在我们俩的身上。我记得我还把乔伊斯·莫罗的羊毛衫铺在了底下--你还记得她那件漂亮的蓝色羊毛衫吗?”<br /> 玛丽·珍妮点了点头,可埃洛依丝根本没去理会。<br /> “嗯,他把手搁在了我的肚子上。你知道。反正,他突然说我的肚子太漂亮了,他真想会有一个军官走过来命令他把另一只手从窗子里伸出去。他说他想做公正的事。然后他又把手拿开,并告诉列车员要把胸挺起来。他对他说,如果有什么事他不能容忍的话,那就是一个男子汉不显出为自己的制服而骄傲的神气。这个列车员只对他说去睡你的觉吧。”埃洛依丝沉思了一会儿说,“并不是他说了什么,而是他如何说的,这你明白。”<br /> “你和路易谈到过他吗--我是说,提没提起过?”<br /> “噢,”埃洛依丝说,“有一次我要说。但他问我的头一件事就是他的军衔是什么。”<br /> “那他的军衔是什么呢?”<br /> “哈!”埃洛依丝说。<br /> “不,我只是说--”<br /> 埃洛依丝突然笑了起来,那笑声出自她的丹田。“你知道他有一次说什么吗?他说他觉得自己在军队里行进,但和其他所有人的方向不一样。他说要是他第一次得到晋升的话,他不会是多了几道杠,而是把衣服袖子拽掉。他说等到他当上将军的时候,他就会浑身上下赤裸裸的了。身上所有的穿戴就只有肚脐上的一个小小的步兵服纽扣了。”埃洛依丝向玛丽·珍妮望去,看见她并没有笑,“你不觉得很滑稽吗?”<br /> “滑稽。只是,你为什么不找时间和路易谈谈他?”<br /> “为什么?就因为他根本一点儿也不开窍。就因为这,”埃洛依丝说。“另外,听我说,干事业的姑娘。假如你再次结婚的话,任何事也不要对你丈夫说,听到了吗?”<br /> “那为什么呀?”玛丽·珍妮说。<br /> “因为我叫你别说,”埃洛依丝说。<br /> “他们会以为每当有一个男的挨近你,你就得招一辈子口供。我这不是开玩笑。噢,你可以告诉他们一些事。但决不能老老实实地。我是说决不能老老实实地。如果你告诉他们你过去认识一个漂亮的小伙子,你就要同时加上一句,说他太漂亮了。如果你告诉他们你认识一个风趣的小伙子,你就要说他简直是一个自作聪明的人,或是一个聪明的家伙。如果你不这样,他们一有机会就会拿这个可怜的小伙子来取笑你。”埃洛依丝停顿下来,一边喝着杯里的酒;一边想着。“噢,”她说,“他们会一本正经地听着。他们甚至会显得聪明得不得了。可你别被蒙住。相信我。要是你相信他们聪明,那你就会倒霉。记住我的话。”<br /> 玛丽·珍妮显得很沮丧,她从睡椅的靠手上抬起下巴,换了个姿势,又枕在了手臂上。她想着埃洛依丝的忠告。“你不能说路易不聪明。”她大声说。<br /> “谁不能说?”<br /> “我是说他很聪明。”玛丽·珍妮天真地说。<br /> “噢,”埃洛依丝说,“说这些有什么用?咱们不谈了。我只会让你不快的。别让我说了。”<br /> “嗯,那干嘛和他结婚?”玛丽·珍妮说。<br /> “噢,天啊!我不知道。他告诉我他喜欢简·奥斯丁。他跟我说她的书对他无比重要。这都是他的原话。结婚后我才发现她的书他连一本也没读过。你知道他最喜欢的作家是谁?”<br /> 玛丽·珍妮摇摇头。<br /> “L·曼宁·万斯。听说过这人吗?”<br /> “没。”<br /> “我也没听说过。谁都没听说过。他写了一本书,讲四个男的在阿拉斯加饿死了。路易不记得书名了。但这就是他读过的最好看的一本书了。我的主!他满可以照直说,说他喜欢这本书,因为它讲的是四个家伙在爱斯基摩人的圆顶雪屋里还是什么地方饿死的事,他甚至连这点诚实都没有,还不得不说这书写得很美。”<br /> “你太苛刻了。”玛丽·珍妮说。“我说你太苛刻了。也许这就是一本好--”<br /> “跟你说,没错,这不会是的,”埃洛依丝说。她想了片刻,然后说,“至少,你还有个工作。我是说至少你--”<br /> “可你听我说,”玛丽·珍妮说。“难道你连沃尔特被打死的事都不准备告诉他吗?我是说他不会妒忌的,不会的,如果他知道沃尔特被--你明白。人死了也就是全完了。”<br /> /> 她走回了起居室,步子不那么稳了。在窗座前,她把酒瓶中剩下的苏格兰威士忌全倒进了自己的杯子,酒大约只有一指深。她把酒喝完,颤抖着,然后坐了下来。<br /> 格莱丝打开了饭厅里的灯,埃洛依丝一惊。她坐着没动,对格莱丝说,“你最好八点再开饭,格莱丝。温格勒先生回来地晚些。”<br /> 格莱丝出现在饭厅的亮光里,但她没往前走。“那位女士走了?”她说。<br /> “她休息呢。”<br /> 埃洛依斯打着哈欠摇了摇头。“邻近没住着什么小男孩。根本就没有小孩。人家在背后都管叫能下崽的芳妮了——” <br /> “妈咪,”拉蒙娜说。“我出去玩行吗?” <br /> 埃洛依斯看着她,“你刚进来嘛,”她说。 <br /> “吉米又想出去了呢。” <br /> “为什么,能告诉我吗?” <br /> “他把他的剑丢在外面了。” <br /> “唉,他跟他那把该死的剑,”埃洛依斯说。“妈吧,走吧。再穿上你的套鞋。” <br /> “我拿上这个行吗?”拉蒙娜说,捡起烟灰缸里的一根烧过的火柴梗。 <br /> “应该说请给我这个好吗?行。别到街上去,听见了吧。” <br /> “再见,拉蒙娜!”玛丽?简拿腔拿调地说。 <br /> “再见,”拉蒙娜说。“走吧,吉米。” <br /> 埃洛依斯猛地站起身来。“把杯子给我,”她说。 <br /> “真的,不喝了,埃尔。我本该在拉契蒙的。我是说韦因伯格先生待我这么好,我真不想——” <br /> “打电话去说你给人杀了不就行了。松开那该死的杯子。” <br /> “不了,真的不行,埃尔。我是说外面正冰冻得很厉害。我车子里几乎没一点防冻剂。我是说如果我不——” <br /> “让它冻去。去打电话呀。就说你死了,”埃洛依斯说。“杯子给我。” <br /> “那……电话在哪儿?” <br /> “嗯,他一来二去把手放在了我的肚子上。你知道吧。总之,他突然说我的肚子真是太美了,因此他希望能有个军官出现命令他把另外那只手伸到窗子外面去。他想他事情应该做得公平些。接着他把手抽了回去,并且告诉列车员得把胸挺直了。他告诉那人,如果有什么事他不能容忍的就是一个人不尊重自己所穿的制服。那列车员光是对他说接着睡你的觉吧。”埃洛依斯沉思了一会儿,然后说,“有趣的不总是他说什么,而是他是怎么说的。你明白吧。” <br /> “你告诉过路易他的事吗——我是说,是不是压根儿没提?” <br /> “哦,”埃洛依斯说,“有一回,我开了个头。可是路易问我的第一件事就是他的军阶是什么?” <br /> “他的军阶究竟是什么呢?” <br /> “哈!”埃洛依斯说。 <br /> “别呀,我的意思只不过是——” <br /> 埃洛依斯突然笑了起来,那声音发自她的小腹深处。“你知道他有一回是怎么说的吗?他说他觉得自己在军队里得到提升,不过方向正好跟所有别的人相反。他说他得到第一次提升时,不是多了几道杠而是两只袖子被扯下来。他说等他当上将军,那就是赤条条一丝不挂了。他身上惟一剩下的就是肚脐眼上那颗小步兵服的军扣了。”埃洛依斯朝玛丽·简看去,见到她并没有笑。“你不觉得这很滑稽吗?” <br /> “是的。不过,你干吗不找个机会跟路易斯谈谈他的事呢?” <br /> “干吗?因为路易斯这人太没有头脑,就因为这个,”埃洛依斯说。“另外,听我的,职业女性。如果你有一天再次结婚,什么事儿也别告诉你的丈夫。你听到了吗?” <br /> “为什么呢?”玛丽?简说。 <br /> “就因为我是这样说的,这就是原因,”埃洛依斯说。“他们愿意相信每回有一个男的接近你,你一辈子都此觉得恶心。我这可不是开玩笑,知道吧。哦,你当然可以给他们说点什么。但永远不要老老实实地说。我的意思是永远别说老实话。如果你告诉他们以前认识一个挺帅的男孩,你得用同一口气接下去说这男孩也未免太漂亮了点儿。要是你告诉他们你认识了一个风趣的男孩,你得告诉他们不过是那类爱招摇卖弄的角色,或者是精得过了头。如果你不这么说,他们会逮着第一次机会拿这个可怜的男孩来敲打你的。”埃洛依斯停住话头,边喝杯里的酒边考虑。“哦,”她说,“他们会非常有修养地听着,像模像样的。他们甚至还会显得很有智慧,挺了不起似的。可是你别给蒙住。相信我。要是你真的有丁点儿相信他们聪明,那你可有苦头要吃了。记得我说的话好了。” “我也没有听说过。别的人也全没听说过。此人写了一本书,讲四个男人在阿拉斯加活活饿死的事。路易记不得书名了,但那是他读过的书里写得最最美的一部。耶稣呀!他其实满可以老老实实说,他喜欢它因为写的是四个家伙在一座圆顶雪屋或是别的什么地儿饿死的事。他却非要说因为它写得很美。” <br /> “你也太苛刻了吧,”玛丽·简说。“我说你太苛刻了。没准那书当时也算是本好——” <br /> “相信我的话好了,那根本不可能,”埃洛依斯说。她想了一会儿,接着说,“至少,你有一份工作。我的意思是至少你——” <br /> “不过,你听我说,”玛丽·简说。“你是想连沃尔特牺牲的事都不告诉他吗?我认为他不会妒忌的,他还会吗,如果他知道了沃尔特已经——你明白吗。牺牲了,一切都过去了。”<br /> “哦,多情种子!你这可怜的,天真幼稚的职业女性,”埃洛依斯说,“他只会更加恶劣。他会成为一个盗墓食尸鬼的。听着,他只会雇记住我跟一个名叫沃尔特的家伙来往过——一个爱说俏皮话的大兵。再怎么着我也不会告诉他沃尔特死了。再怎么着也不会。要是我真的说了——那是绝对不会——不过要是我真的说了,我会告诉他沃尔特是在战斗中被打死的。” <br /> 玛丽?简把她的下巴往前移了移,靠到自己前臂的外缘。 <br “哦,”埃洛依斯说,“他那个团在某个地方休整。那是在两次战斗或是什么事的间歇之中吧,给我写信的他那朋友是这么说的。沃尔特跟另一个小伙子正把这只小型的日本炉子打包装箱。有个上校要把它寄回家去。也可能是他们正把它从箱子里取出来以便重新包装——具体情况我也不清楚。总之,装满了汽油和乱七八糟东西的炉子在他们面前爆炸了。另外的那小伙子仅仅是瞎了一只眼睛。”埃洛依斯开始哭了起来。她伸出一只手去拢住胸前的那只空杯子,不让它掉下来。 <br /> 玛丽·简从长沙发上溜下来,她双膝着地往前挪动了三步,来到埃洛依斯跟前,开始轻拍她的脑门。“别哭,埃,别哭了。” <br /> “谁哭了?”埃洛依斯说。 <br /> “我知道,可是别这样。我是说犯不着的,没意思的。” <br /> 这时,前门开了。 <br /> “是拉蒙娜回来了,”埃洛依斯[打不出来]说。“帮我这个忙。你到厨房去告诉那婆娘早点儿给拉蒙娜开饭。行吗?” <br /> “行啊,不过你得答应我别哭了。” <br /> “我答应。去吧。我这会儿不想在那鬼地方露面。” <br /> 玛丽·简站起来,打了个趔趄,又重新站稳,走出房间。 <br /> 不到两分钟她又回来了,拉蒙娜跑在她的前面。拉蒙娜尽可能让整个脚掌着地,以便让解松的套鞋发出最大的声音。 <br /> “她不肯让我帮她脱鞋,”玛丽?简说。 <br /> 埃洛依斯仍然仰面躺在地板上,正用手绢擦试嘴。她透赤手绢说话,是在吩咐拉蒙娜。“去那边房间告诉格雷斯让她给你脱套鞋。你知道你是不应该进来弄得——” <br /> “她在上厕所呢,”拉蒙娜说。 <br /> 埃洛依斯放开手绢,把身子挺坐起来。“脚伸过来,”她说。“先坐下来,好不好……不是那边——是这边。天哪!” <br /> 玛丽?简跪在地上找她的烟盒,她说:“嗨,你猜吉米出了什么事。” <br /> “喂,”埃洛依斯对着话筒说,也不去打开头顶上的电灯。“跟你说,我没法去接你。玛丽·简在这儿哪。她把车停在我车子面前,可她找不到车钥匙了。我出不去。我们大约花了二十分钟找钥匙,在那个叫什么来着的里面——雪和脏泥那类东西。你是不是可以搭,迪克和米尔德里德的车子?”她听着。“哦,是的,这太惨了,宝贝。你们这些小伙子干吗不组成一个排列回家呢?你们可以喊一、二、三、四这一套呢。你可以当头儿呀。”她又听对方说话。“我没在开玩笑,”她说。“真的,我没有。就只是我那张脸让人觉得可笑。”她把电话挂了。 <br /> 她走回到起居室。步子没那么稳了。在窗前椅子那里,她把瓶子里剩余的酒倒进自己杯子。那大概有一指深。她把酒喝光,打了个冷颤,坐了下来。 <br /> 格雷斯开这餐厅电灯时埃洛依斯吃了一惊。她没有站起来,只是大声对格雷斯说,“你最好等到八点再开饭,格雷斯。温格勒先生要稍晚些才能回来。” <br /> 格雷斯身影出现在餐厅亮光里,但她没有再往前走。“那位女士走啦?”她说, <br /> “她在休息呢。” <br /> “哦,”格雷斯说。“温格勒太太,我想问一句,能不能让我丈夫在这儿过一夜。我的房间里地方还够,这样他就可以明天早上再回纽约去了,外面天气太糟糕了。” <br /> “你丈夫?他在哪儿?” <br /> “哦,这会儿,”格雷斯说,“他就在厨房里呢。” <br /> “啊,我怕他不能在这儿过夜,格雷斯。” <br /> “太太?” <br /> 她啪地打开拉蒙娜房间的灯,手一直按在开关上,仿佛要支撑身子。她站住不动有她一会儿,注视着拉蒙娜。接着她松开电灯开关,快步走到床前。 <br /> “拉蒙娜,醒醒。给我醒醒。” <br /> 拉蒙娜紧靠床边睡着,右边屁股都出了床沿。她的眼镜放在一张唐老鸭模样的小床头柜上,整齐地折直,镜脚朝下。 <br /> “拉蒙娜!” <br /> 埃洛依斯走到开关前,啪地把灯关掉。不过她在门口站了她一会儿。接着,突然,她在黑暗中朝床头柜冲了过去,膝盖撞在床脚上,只是注意力太集中也没觉得疼。她拿起拉蒙娜的眼镜,双手捏着,把它贴向自己的脸颊。眼泪顺着脸流了下来,打湿了镜片。“可怜的威格利大叔,”她一遍又一遍地说。最后,她把眼镜放回到床头柜上,这回是镜片朝下。 <br /> <p><font size="3">4.结尾处,汪版这样表达——埃洛依丝摇晃着玛丽·珍妮的胳膊。“我是个好姑娘,”她恳求地问,“对吗?” <br />何版则加了个时间定语“那会儿”,变成了“‘我那会儿是个好姑娘,’”,这两种表达在精确性上无疑有很大不同,你认为在当时这两个姑娘聊天的语境中,是否有必要体现其精确性?体现之后呈现的效果传达了作者(汪光强、何上峰)怎样的不同追求?</font></p><p>回答:</p><p>我认为在当时这两个姑娘聊天的语境中,是有必要体现其精确性的。我更喜欢何上峰的译本。何版体现了过去和现在之间的巨大外表反差和内在的无变化。而汪版的则过于的平和,没有这种反差和对比。汪版的短剧显然显得不着急,不上火,很平很稳。但是何版的很多的长句显示了小说里的一种人物急促、慌乱而混庸的气息。威格利大叔代表了逝去了的那些青春和纯情时光,当生活开始变成一种负担的时候,埃格利斯和玛丽内心深处的世界停留在了一种过去的光亮中不能自拔。这也是这篇小说最后的结尾,让人心疼的最大原因。何版的译文让这种心疼更加的剧烈,更加的让人难忘。</p>

<p>这四个问题我觉得基本上就是归根于两个译者的翻译观差异。汪版是意译,而何版,单从我们所能看到的,最直接地给我的印象就是他是尽量甚至是能保持原有的句式,就不会随意更改的,也就是直译,当然这里的直译,并不是一股脑子的,它混杂了意译的一些可以融通的可能在其中。所以从翻译来说,我更赞同何版的翻译方式。就我个人的经验来说,我常常在翻译时,会考虑,为什么作者要这样说,而不那样说,而这里的这样,在某种程度上正是在反应写作者的一种语言习惯,而这个语言习惯所延伸出来的写作风格也是我们正期盼,想要看到的。同时,我个人也更倾向在翻译时尽可能的保留与原语言句式的平行,实在不行再退而求其次。</p><p>所以第一个问题,关于小说的标题,原英文是Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut,这句英文很简单。in Conecticut,是对Uncle Wiggily的补充,到这里我只能用我浅薄的毫无深度专业水准以及对语法的无限“遗忘”,来理解:汪是把这个补充理解成一种定语形式的补充,继而把它转换成“什么什么的”,但是如果把它仅仅理解成一个补语,嗯,我那瘸腿的语法……也可以译成直观的,视觉先行的“……在什么什么”,"there is a Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut."因此,基本上这两个翻译,没有差别(脚腕都已经扭了,我们就不要再折腾它了)。</p><p>第二段开头第一句的英文原句如下:</p><p>Twenty minutes later, they were finishing their first highball in the living room and were talking in the manner peculiar, probably limited, to former college roommates. </p><p>汪版:二十分钟后,她们在起居室里一边聊着天,一边喝着她们的第一杯掺了苏打水的威士忌酒。她们谈话的方式很独特,也许这种方式仅限于大学同宿舍之间。</p><p>何版:二十分钟后,她们已经在起居室里快喝光她们的第一高脚杯威士忌酒了,并且以曾在大学同住过一个房间的那种特殊的、也许是仅限于“室友”才能有的方式聊起天来了。</p><p>先撇开不谈长句被拆分。我们来看highball的翻译,汪翻译成掺了苏打水的威士忌酒,何翻译成“高脚杯威士忌酒”,而highball的到底是一种什么样的威士忌酒呢——A cocktail served in a tall glass and consisting of liquor, such as whiskey, mixed with water or a carbonated beverage,即一种装在高脚杯里的鸡尾酒,这种鸡尾酒通常是掺了水或者碳酸饮料的威士忌又或者其他的酒。所以要准确的翻译出highball真是有点麻烦,不过这个不打紧。</p><p>看原句,喝(酒)和聊天是并列的,这两个动词是同形式的,用的是and来连接,是同时进行的,所以汪用“一边……一边……”,就比较准确。而何用的是“并且”作为并列连接,虽然尽量保持与原英文句式的平行,但是相比起来,就少了些两种语言的相互“融入”。因为用了一边一边造句,汪就不得不拆分掉这个长句。把“talking in the manner peculiar, probably limited, to former college roommates.”翻译成独立的句子,对她们的谈话方式进行说明。我以为塞林格所表达的状态就是这样的。相比起来我觉得汪的翻译在这里就好一点(不过为什么不是她们一边喝着,一边聊天……我别扭了)。</p><p>最后一个问题,先看英文原句Eloise shook Mary Jane's arm. <p>汪光强的翻译是一种作者式的翻译,他对语言的态度是那种汉语作者对语言的态度;何上峰的翻译是一种翻译机器式的翻译,对语言的态度是那种学英文的对语言的态度。</p><p>问题的这几个例子特别能让人有这个感觉。</p><p>第2段开始,汪光强的几个短句的节奏很柔和,符合这两个人进了屋20分钟后的现场的感觉。就像作者在讲述一个事情。</p><p>何上峰的这个句子,形式上就很绕,感觉一个很家常的事被弄复杂了,有点书生气了,没有那种作者下笔写一个句子的“主见”。<br />而且这个句子还有些歧异。意思上感觉好象2个人的对饮先有了一段除了聊天以外别的什么事情后再开始聊天,好象先静默了会儿?试探了会儿?再聊天也有可能。这好象又不符合小说开头时两个人展现出的关系。</p><p>结尾,汪光强的翻译是暗含着时态,人物是在说过去的事情,然后说“我是个好姑娘”.....是在讲述着过去那个时间段。最后这个结尾的翻译挺符合我们自己说话的方式,我们生活里说话就是这样。</p><p>何上峰的翻译把时态完全直译,把英语的时态直接翻译成汉语,会造就一种典型的翻译腔。翻译腔都来自直译,何上峰在这里的翻译就是这样。实际上我们说话又不是这样体现(重视)时态的,如果在这个时候,在我们生活里这么说话,会觉得“洋”了,美国电影了。</p>[此帖子已经被作者于[lastedittime]1218637678[/lastedittime]编辑过]

"Is that you, Ramona?"<br /><br />"Yes," a small child's voice answered.<br /><br />"Close the front door after you, please," Eloise called.<br /><br />"Is that Ramona? Oh, I'm dying to see her. Do you realize I haven't seen her since she had her--" <br /><br />"Ramona," Eloise shouted, with her eyes shut, "go out in the kitchen and let Grace take your galoshes off."<br /><br />"All right," said Ramona. "C'mon, Jimmy."<br /><br />"Oh, I'm dying to see her," Mary Jane said. "Oh, God! Look what I did. I'm terribly sorry, El." <br /><br />"Leave it. Leave it," said Eloise. "I hate this damn rug anyway. I'll get you another."<br /><br />"No, look, I have more than half left!" Mary Jane held up her glass.<br /><br />"Sure?" said Eloise. "Gimme a cigarette."<br /><br />Mary Jane extended her pack of cigarettes, saying "Oh, I'm dying to see her. Who does she look like now?"<br /><br />Eloise struck a light. "Akim Tamiroff." <br /><br />"No, seriously."<br /><br />"Lew. She looks like Lew. When his mother comes over, the three of them look like triplets." Without sitting up, Eloise reached for a stack of ashtrays on the far side of the cigarette table. She successfully lifted off the top one and set it down on her stomach. "What I need is a cocker spaniel or something," she said. "Somebody that looks like me."<br /><br />"How're her eyes now?" Mary Jane asked. "I mean they're not any worse or anything, are they?"<br /><br />"God! Not that I know of."<br /><br />"Can she see at all without her glasses? I mean if she gets up in the night to go to the john or something.<br /><br />"She won't tell anybody. She's lousy with secrets." <br /><br />Mary Jane turned around in her chair. "Well, hello, Ramona!" she said. "Oh, what a pretty dress!" She set down her drink. "I'll bet you don't even remember me, Ramona."<br /><br />"Certainly she does. Who's the lady, Ramona?" <br /><br />"Mary Jane," said Ramona, and scratched herself. <br /><br />"Marvellous!" said Mary Jane. "Ramona, will you give me a little kiss?"<br /><br />"Stop that," Eloise said to Ramona. <br /><br />Ramona stopped scratching herself.<br /><br />"Will you give me a little kiss, Ramona?" Mary Jane asked again.<br /><br />"I don't like to kiss people."<br /><br />Eloise snorted, and asked, "Where's Jimmy?" <br /><br />"He's here."<br /><br />"Who's Jimmy?" Mary Jane asked Eloise.<br /><br />"Oh, God! Her beau. Goes where she goes. Does what she does. All very hoopla."<br /><br />"Really?" said Mary Jane enthusiastically. She leaned forward. "Do you have a beau, Ramona?" <br /><br />Ramona's eyes, behind thick, counter-myopia lenses, did not reflect even the smallest part of Mary Jane's enthusiasm.<br /><br />"Mary Jane asked you a question, Ramona," Eloise said.<br /><br />Ramona inserted a finger into her small, broad nose. <br /><br />"Stop that," Eloise said. "Mary Jane asked you if you have a beau."<br /><br />"Yes," said Ramona, busy with her nose.<br /><br />"Ramona," Eloise said. "Cut that out. But immediately."<br /><br />Ramona put her hand down.<br /><br />"Well, I think that's just wonderful," Mary Jane said. "What's his name? Will you tell me his name, Ramona? Or is it a big secret?"<br /><br />"Jimmy," Ramona said.<br /><br />"Jimmy? Oh, I love the name Jimmy! Jimmy what, Ramona?"<br /><br />"Jimmy Jimmereeno," said Ramona. <br /><br />"Stand still," said Eloise.<br /><br />"Well! That's quite a name. Where is Jimmy? Will you tell me, Ramona?"<br /><br />"Here," said Ramona.<br /><br />Mary Jane looked around, then looked back at Ramona, smiling as provocatively as possible. "Here where, honey?" <br /><br />"Here," said Ramona. "I'm holding his hand." <br /><br />"I don't get it," Mary Jane said to Eloise, who was finishing her drink.<br /><br />"Don't look at me," said Eloise.<br /><br />Mary Jane looked back at Ramona. "Oh, I see. Jimmy's just a make-believe little boy. Marvellous." Mary Jane leaned forward cordially. "How do you do, Jimmy?" she said.<br /><br />"He won't talk to you," said Eloise. "Ramona, tell Mary Jane about Jimmy."<br /><br />"Tell her what?"<br /><br />"Stand up, please. . . . Tell Mary Jane how Jimmy looks."<br /><br />"He has green eyes and black hair." <br /><br />"What else?"<br /><br />"No mommy and no daddy." <br /><br />"What else?"<br /><br />"No freckles."<br /><br />"What else?" <br /><br />"A sword." <br /><br />"What else?"<br /><br />"I don't know," said Ramona, and began to scratch herself again.<br /><br />"He sounds beautiful!" Mary Jane said, and leaned even farther forward in her chair. "Ramona. Tell me. Did Jimmy take off his galoshes, too, when you came in?"<br /><br />"He has boots," Ramona said. <br /><br />"Marvellous," Mary Jane said to Eloise.<br /><br />"You just think so. I get it all day long. Jimmy eats with her. Takes a bath with her. Sleeps with her. She sleeps way over to one side of the bed, so's not to roll over and hurt him."<br /><br />Looking absorbed and delighted with this information, Mary Jane took in her lower lip, then released it to ask, "Where'd he get that name, though?" <br /><br />"Jimmy Jimmereeno? God knows."<br /><br />"
robably from some little boy in the neighborhood."<br /><br />Eloise, yawning, shook her head. "There are no little boys in the neighborhood. No children at all. They call me Fertile Fanny behind my--"<br /><br />"Mommy," Ramona said, "can I go out and play?" <br /><br />Eloise looked at her. "You just came in," she said. <br /><br />"Jimmy wants to go out again."<br /><br />"Why, may I ask?"<br /><br />"He left his sword outside."<br /><br />"Oh, him and his goddam sword," Eloise said. "Well. Go ahead. Put your galoshes back on."<br /><br />"Can I have this?" Ramona said, taking a burned match out of the ashtray.<br /><br />"May I have this. Yes. Stay out of the street, please."<br /><br />"Goodbye, Ramona!" Mary Jane said musically. <br /><br />"Bye," said Ramona. "C'mon, Jimmy."<br /><br />Eloise lunged suddenly to her feet. "Gimme your glass," she said.<br /><br />"No, really, El. I'm supposed to be in Larchmont. I mean Mr. Weyinburg's so sweet, I hate to--" <br /><br />"Call up and say you were killed. Let go of that damn glass."<br /><br />"No, honestly, El. I mean it's getting so terribly icy. I have hardly any anti-freeze in the car. I mean if I don't--"<br /><br />"Let it freeze. Go phone. Say you're dead," said Eloise. "Gimme that."<br /><br />"Well . . . Where's the phone?"<br /><br />"It went," said Eloise, carrying the empty glasses and walking toward the dining room, "--this-a-way." She stopped short on the floor board between the living room and the dining room and executed a grind and a bump. Mary Jane giggled.<br /><br />"I mean you didn't really know Walt," said Eloise at a quarter of five, lying on her back on the floor, a drink balanced upright on her small-breasted chest. "He was the only boy I ever knew that could make me laugh. I mean really laugh." She looked over at Mary Jane. "You remember that night--our last year--when that crazy Louise Hermanson busted in the room wearing that black brassiere she bought in Chicago?"<br /><br />Mary Jane giggled. She was lying on her stomach on the couch, her chin on the armrest, facing Eloise. Her drink was on the floor, within reach.<br /><br />"Well, he could make me laugh that way," Eloise said. "He could do it when he talked to me. He could do it over the phone. He could even do it in a letter. And the best thing about it was that he didn't even try to be funny--he just was funny." She turned her head slightly toward Mary Jane. "Hey, how 'bout throwing me a cigarette?"<br /><br />"I can't reach 'em," Mary Jane said.<br /><br />"Nuts to you." Eloise looked up at the ceiling again. "Once," she said, "I fell down. I used to wait for him at the bus stop, right outside the PX, and he showed up late once, just as the bus was pulling out. We started to run for it, and I fell and twisted my ankle. He said, `Poor Uncle Wiggily.' He meant my ankle. Poor old Uncle Wiggily, he called it. . . . God, he was nice."<br /><br />"Doesn't Lew have a sense of humor?" Mary Jane said.<br /><br />"What?"<br /><br />"Doesn't Lew have a sense of humor?"<br /><br />"Oh, God! Who knows? Yes. I guess so. He laughs at cartoons and stuff." Eloise raised her head, lifted her drink from her chest, and drank from it.<br /><br />"Well," Mary Jane said. "That isn't everything. I mean that isn't everything."<br /><br />"What isn't?"<br /><br />"Oh . . . you know. Laughing and stuff."<br /><br />"Who says it isn't?" Eloise said. "Listen, if you're not gonna be a nun or something, you might as well laugh."<br /><br />Mary Jane giggled. "You're terrible," she said. <br /><br />"Ah, God, he was nice," Eloise said. "He was either funny or sweet. Not that damn little-boy sweet, either. It was a special kind of sweet. You know what he did once?"<br /><br />"Uh-uh," Mary Jane said.<br /><br />"We were on the train going from Trenton to New York--it was just right after he was drafted. It was cold in the car and I had my coat sort of over us. I remember I had Joyce Morrow's cardigan on underneath--you remember that darling blue cardigan she had?"<br /><br />Mary Jane nodded, but Eloise didn't look over to get the nod.<br /><br />"Well, he sort of had his hand on my stomach. You know. Anyway, all of a sudden he said my stomach was so beautiful he wished some officer would come up and order him to stick his other hand through the window. He said he wanted to do what was fair. Then he took his hand away and told the conductor to throw his shoulders back. He told him if there was one thing he couldn't stand it was a man who didn't look proud of his uniform. The conductor just told him to go back to sleep." Eloise reflected a moment, then said, "It wasn't always what he said, but how he said it. You know."<br /><br />"Have you ever told Lew about him--I mean, at all?"<br /><br />"Oh," Eloise said, "I started to, once. But the first thing he asked me was what his rank was."<br /><br />"What was his rank?" <br /><br />"Ha!" said Eloise. <br /><br />"No, I just meant--"<br /><br />Eloise laughed suddenly, from her diaphragm. "You know what he said once? He said he felt he was advancing in the Army, but in a different direction from everybody else. He said that when he'd get his first promotion, instead of getting stripes he'd have his sleeves taken away from him. He said when he'd get to be a general, he'd be stark naked. All he'd be wearing would be a little infantry button in his navel." Eloise looked over at Mary Jane, who wasn't laughing. "Don't you think that's funny?"<br /><br />"Yes. Only, why don't you tell Lew about him sometime, though?"<br /><br />"Why? Because he's too damn unintelligent, that's why," Eloise said. "Besides. Listen to me, career girl. If you ever get married again, don't tell your husband anything. Do you hear me?"<br /><br />"Why?" said Mary Jane.<br /><br />"Because I say so, that's why," said Eloise. "They wanna think you spent your whole life vomiting every time a boy came near you. I'm not kidding, either. Oh, you can tell them stuff. But never honestly. I mean never honestly. If you tell 'em you once knew a handsome boy, you gotta say in the same breath he was too handsome. And if you tell 'em you knew a witty boy, you gotta tell 'em he was kind of a smart aleck, though, or a wise guy. If you don't, they hit you over the head with the poor boy every time they get a chance." Eloise paused to drink from her glass and to think. "Oh," she said, "they'll listen very maturely and all that. They'll even look intelligent as hell. But don't let it fool you. Believe me. You'll go through hell if you ever give 'em any credit for intelligence. Take my word."<br /><br />Mary Jane, looking depressed, raised her chin from the armrest of the couch. For a change, she supported her chin on her forearm. She thought over Eloise's advice. "You can't call Lew not intelligent," she said aloud.<br /><br />"Who can't?"<br /><br />"I mean isn't he intelligent?" Mary Jane said innocently.<br /><br />"Oh," said Eloise, "what's the use of talking? Let's drop it. I'll just depress you. Shut me up." <br /><br />"Well, wudga marry him for, then?" Mary Jane said.<br /><br />"Oh, God! I don't know. He told me he loved Jane Austen. He told me her books meant a great deal to him. That's exactly what he said. I found out after we were married that he hadn't even read one of her books. You know who his favorite author is?"<br /><br />Mary Jane shook her head.<br /><br />"L. Manning Vines. Ever hear of him?" <br /><br />"Uh-uh."<br /><br />"Neither did I. Neither did anybody else. He wrote a book about four men that starved to death in Alaska. Lew doesn't remember the name of it, but it's the most beautifully written book he's ever read. Christ! He isn't even honest enough to come right out and say he liked it because it was about four guys that starved to death in an igloo or something. He has to say it was beautifully written."<br /><br />"You're too critical," Mary Jane said. "I mean you're too critical. Maybe it was a good-"<br /><br />"Take my word for it, it couldn't've been," Eloise said. She thought for a moment, then added, "At least, you have a job. I mean at least you--"<br /><br />"But listen, though," said Mary Jane. "Do you think you'll ever tell him Walt was killed, even? I mean he wouldn't be jealous, would he, if he knew Walt was--you know. Killed and everything.<br /><br /><br /><br />"Oh, lover! You poor, innocent little career girl," said Eloise. "He'd be worse. He'd be a ghoul. Listen. All he knows is that I went around with somebody named Walt--some wisecracking G.I. The last thing I'd do would be to tell him he was killed. But the last thing. And if I did--which I wouldn't--but if I did, I'd tell him he was killed in action."<br /><br />Mary Jane pushed her chin farther forward over the edge of her forearm.<br /><br />"El. . ." she said.<br /><br />"Why won't you tell me how he was killed? I swear I won't tell anybody. Honestly. Please."<br /><br />"No."<br /><br />"
lease. Honestly. I won't tell anybody."<br /><br />Eloise finished her drink and replaced the empty glass upright on her chest. "You'd tell Akim Tamiroff," she said.<br /><br />"No, I wouldn't! I mean I wouldn't tell any--" <br /><br />"Oh," said Eloise, "his regiment was resting someplace. It was between battles or something, this friend of his said that wrote me. Walt and some other boy were putting this little Japanese stove in a package. Some colonel wanted to send it home. Or they were taking it out of the package to rewrap it--I don't know exactly. Anyway, it was all full of gasoline and junk and it exploded in their faces. The other boy just lost an eye." Eloise began to cry. She put her hand around the empty glass on her chest to steady it.<br /><br />Mary Jane slid off the couch and, on her knees, took three steps over to Eloise and began to stroke her forehead. "Don't cry, El. Don't cry."<br /><br />"Who's crying?" Eloise said.<br /><br />"I know, but don't. I mean it isn't worth it or anything.<br /><br />The front door opened.<br /><br />"That's Ramona back," Eloise said nasally. "Do me a favor. Go out in the kitchen and tell whosis to give her her dinner early. Willya?"<br /><br />"All right, if you promise not to cry, though."<br /><br />"I promise. Go on. I don't feel like going out to that damn kitchen right this minute."<br /><br />Mary Jane stood up, losing and recovering her balance, and left the room.<br /><br />She was back in less than two minutes, with Ramona running ahead of her. Ramona ran as flatfooted as possible, trying to get the maximum noise out of her open galoshes.<br /><br />"She wouldn't let me take her galoshes off," Mary Jane said.<br /><br />Eloise, still lying on her back on the floor, was using her handkerchief. She spoke into it, addressing Ramona. "Go out and tell Grace to take your galoshes off. You know you're not supposed to come into the--"<br /><br />"She's in the lavatory," Ramona said.<br /><br />Eloise put away her handkerchief and hoisted herself to a sitting position. "Gimme your foot," she said. "Sit down, first, please. . . . Not there--here. God!"<br /><br />On her knees, looking under the table for her cigarettes, Mary Jane said, "Hey. Guess what happened to Jimmy."<br /><br />"No idea. Other foot. Other foot."<br /><br />"He got runned over," said Mary Jane. "Isn't that tragic?"<br /><br />"I saw Skipper with a bone," Ramona told Eloise. <br /><br />"What happened to Jimmy?" Eloise said to her. <br /><br />"He got runned over and killed. I saw Skipper with a bone, and he wouldn't--"<br /><br />"Gimme your forehead a second," Eloise said. She reached out and felt Ramona's forehead. "You feel a little feverish. Go tell Grace you're to have your dinner upstairs. Then you're to go straight to bed. I'll be up later. Go on, now, please. Take these with you."<br /><br />Ramona slowly giant-stepped her way out of the room.<br /><br />"Throw me one," Eloise said to Mary Jane. "Let's have another drink."<br /><br />Mary Jane carried a cigarette over to Eloise. "Isn't that something? About Jimmy? What an imagination!"<br /><br />"Mm. You go get the drinks, huh? And bring the bottle . . . I don't wanna go out there. The whole damn place smells like orange juice."<br /><br />At five minutes past seven, the phone rang. Eloise got up from the window seat and felt in the dark for her shoes. She couldn't find them. In her stocking feet, she walked steadily, almost languidly, toward the phone. The ringing didn't disturb Mary Jane, who was asleep on the couch, face down.<br /><br />"Hello," Eloise said into the phone, without having turned the overhead light on. "Look, I can't meet you. Mary Jane's here. She's got her car parked right in front of me and she can't find the key. I can't get out. We spent about twenty minutes looking for it in the wuddayacallit--the snow and stuff. Maybe you can get a lift with Dick and Mildred." She listened. "Oh. Well, that's tough, kid. Why don't you boys form a platoon and march home? You can say that but-hopehoop-hoop business. You can be the big shot." She listened again. "I'm not funny," she said. "Really, I'm not. It's just my face." She hung up.<br /><br />She walked, less steadily, back into the living room. At the window seat, she poured what was left in the bottle of Scotch into her glass. It made about a finger. She drank it off, shivered, and sat down.<br /><br />When Grace turned on the light in the dining room, Eloise jumped. Without getting up, she called in to Grace, "You better not serve until eight, Grace. Mr. Wengler'll be a little late."<br /><br />Grace appeared in the dining-room light but didn't come forward. "The lady go?" she said.<br /><br />"She's resting."<br /><br />"Oh," said Grace. "Miz Wengler, I wondered if it'd be all right if my husband passed the evenin' here. I got plentya room in my room, and he don't have to be back in New York till tomorrow mornin', and it's so bad out."<br /><br />"Your husband? Where is he?"<br /><br />"Well, right now," Grace said, "he's in the kitchen." <br /><br />"Well, I'm afraid he can't spend the night here, Grace."<br /><br />"Ma'am?"<br /><br />"I say I'm afraid he can't spend the night here. I'm not running a hotel."<br /><br />Grace stood for a moment, then said, "Yes, Ma'am," and went out to the kitchen.<br /><br />Eloise left the living room and climbed the stairs, which were lighted very faintly by the overglow from the dining room. One of Ramona's galoshes was lying on the landing. Eloise picked it up and threw it, with as much force as possible, over the side of the banister; it struck the foyer floor with a violent thump.<br /><br />She snapped on the light in Ramona's room and held on to the switch, as if for support. She stood still for a moment looking at Ramona. Then she let go of the light switch and went quickly over to the bed. "Ramona. Wake up. Wake up."<br /><br />Ramona was sleeping far over on one side of the bed, her right buttock off the edge. Her glasses were on a little Donald Duck night table, folded neatly and laid stems down.<br /><br />"Ramona!"<br /><br />The child awoke with a sharp intake of breath. Her eyes opened wide, but she narrowed them almost at once. "Mommy?"<br /><br />"I thought you told me Jimmy Jimmereeno was run over and killed."<br /><br />"What?<br /><br />"You heard me," Eloise said. "Why are you sleeping way over here?"<br /><br />"Because," said Ramona.<br /><br />"Because why? Ramona, I don't feel like--" <br /><br />"Because I don't want to hurt Mickey."<br /><br />"Who?"<br /><br />"Mickey," said Ramona, rubbing her nose. "Mickey Mickeranno."<br /><br />Eloise raised her voice to a shriek. "You get in the center of that bed. Go on."<br /><br />Ramona, extremely frightened, just looked up at Eloise.<br /><br />"All right." Eloise grabbed Ramona's ankles and half lifted and half pulled her over to the middle of the bed. Ramona neither struggled nor cried; she let herself be moved without actually submitting to it.<br /><br />"Now go to sleep," Eloise said, breathing heavily. "Close your eyes.... You heard me, close them." <br /><br />Ramona closed her eyes.<br /><br />Eloise went over to the light switch and flicked it off. But she stood for a long time in the doorway. Then, suddenly, she rushed, in the dark, over to the night table, banging her knee against the foot of the bed, but too full of purpose to feel pain. She picked up Ramona's glasses and, holding them in both hands, pressed them against her cheek. Tears rolled down her face, wetting the lenses. "

Finally, she put the glasses back on the night table, lenses down.<br /><br />She stooped over, losing her balance, and began to tuck in the blankets of Ramona's bed. Ramona was awake. She was crying and had been crying. Eloise kissed her wetly on the mouth and wiped the hair out of her eyes and then left the room.<br /><br />She went downstairs, staggering now very badly, and wakened Mary Jane.<br /><br />"Wuzzat? Who? Huh?" said Mary Jane, sitting bolt upright on the couch.<br /><br />"Mary Jane. Listen. Please," Eloise said, sobbing. "You remember our freshman year, and I had that brawn-and-yellow dress I bought in Boise, and Miriam Ball told me nobody wore those kind of dresses in New York, and I cried all night?" Eloise shook Mary Jane's arm. "I was a nice girl," she pleaded, "wasn't I?"</p><p>前面那个was,这个时态,其实挺巧妙,似乎不仅是一种语言习惯,它表明了状态,同时似乎也突出了说话人的心态,“我那会儿是个……”,语气,包括说话的人对过去、现在的自己的审视,都能表现出来。感觉加上“那会儿”挺好的,个人觉得不会很不正常,日常对话中,会有这样说的吧。后面的“那会儿”,似乎加上就没那么自然,在英文中这样的重复挺自然,翻译过来似乎有点啰嗦。</p><p></p><p>另外还是觉得有“在”的题目比有“的”的好,有状态啊,也有种很……忧伤的动感。。</p>

<p><br />"前面那个was,这个时态,其实挺巧妙,似乎不仅是一种语言习惯,它表明了状态,"</p><p>我的理解刚好相反。我觉得was仅仅是个语言习惯,是个规则,是能起到表明时间状态的规则。不遵守这个规则就是语法错误。</p><p>“我那会是个好姑娘”好象主人公现在觉得自己已经不是好姑娘了。这里恐怕已经给“I was a nice girl”附加些内容。汉语强调时间经常会产生一种“与....相对立,对......以否定”的意思来。</p><p>“我是个好姑娘”,主人公是在说在过去我是....不是和现在对立,延续到现在也许还是好姑娘。</p><p>两个翻译里的,主人公一个显得哀婉、自怜,一个是倔强、主动的、有主见的,也是冷峻的。</p>[此帖子已经被作者于[lastedittime]1218769181[/lastedittime]编辑过]

<p>这样这样……眼镜的问题我不纠结了。</p><p>我在最后那句话的翻译上真是摇摆不定………………其实把时态翻译出来,按照常理来说是必要的,英语要表示过去时,在这里是变形be动词,但是中文里的“是”是没有办法完成这个任务,在中文里面我们需要通过其他的方式来表示过去,所以互相参照看,再按照李陀的带入思维也就必须如此,“那会儿”里面有潜台词,有向后,也有向前的潜台词在其中,而从小说里看艾洛伊斯的性格,倒是一个爽快的人,其实内心却也柔软。这里我想到她拒绝女仆的丈夫在她家里过夜的这么一个事情……</p><p></p>

<p><br />我理解边河的这种想法。包括边河在4楼说的,还有小说最后艾洛伊斯对待女仆的态度,那么不近人情。</p><p>总之这些内容都产生了一种“合情合理”,就是在何版的翻译里看到的,李头说的,艾洛伊斯“不太满足现在的自己”“怀念”“安慰”。何版的翻译产生这种“合情合理”的方式来自“那会”二字产生的煽情效果,让人回溯一看前面的内容,觉得是,艾洛伊斯这会儿的哀婉、自怜是有道理的,这符合一般的阅读经验,符合一种常见的,读者、作者都共同知晓的阅读心理。何也正是顺着这种“经验”走。但这是翻译,凭我浅薄的英语知识,我还是相当坚定地认为最后的一句是被篡改了。</p><p>关键是何版的翻译最不可取的是,他的这个结尾是一种“总结”式的结尾,是一种产生了关闭效果的结尾,是煽情也是在感情上做完了总结。像一个莽汉抡起锤子往一个木盒上多情地钉一个盖子,在空间感上它伤害了这篇小说。特别喜欢汪的版本,我认为这个结尾是体现作者本意的,这个结尾是那种“无形”式的结尾,,它不发力、不煽情,它是开放的,没有总结,没有把这个小说关闭,像一根手指上缠绕着的细线上悬浮中的氢气球。<br /></p>[此帖子已经被作者于[lastedittime]1218867637[/lastedittime]编辑过]
