He was born in <a title="Mexico" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico">Mexico</a> on <a title="March 2" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_2">March 2</a>, <a title="1947" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1947">1947</a>. His poetry is widely read, and has been included in the popular high school poetry anthology, <i>Touched with Fire</i>. He is a fellow of the <a title="Royal Society of Literature" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Society_of_Literature">Royal Society of Literature</a>.</p><p>He is currently a Professor of Poetry and Convener of the Creative Writing course at the <a title="University of Glasgow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Glasgow">University of Glasgow</a>, and is a founder and director of <a title="Carcanet Press" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcanet_Press">Carcanet Press</a>.
