The Asia Pacific Documentary Film Festival is a collaborative project between the Asia-Australia Art Centre and Performance Space. It involves more than 20 art practitioners from the Asia-Pacific region and will be the first of its kind to be shown in Australia. The works will be exhibited over a period of two months but as an official opening night special we will be exhibiting all the works.

The Festival will be a major survey of the documentary style employed by contemporary artists as a new mode of expression. Each artist explores the rapidity of change responding to the social and political climates within this region.

Leung Mee Ping?s Out of Place (Wanchai Version) focuses on the ambiguity between notions of public and private, home and place, and the position of the subject. It is an exploration on the micro polities of Chinese society through the individual as the artist probes into the ordinary life of a lone figure. Out of Place (Wanchai Version) is one film from a series of documentary style works that focus on various cities in Asia.

Out of Place (Wanchai Version) is a documentation of a lone man meandering through the Wanchai district streets in Hong Kong for a week. The artist has no contact with the subject simply recording his movements as he wanders aimlessly at first, seemingly not able to remember who, or where he is, outside the society that no longer notices his existence. We see him stumbling confused, and disorientated?and yet he is amongst society, as the artists explains ?someone who we perhaps would not give a second glance.? Leung Mee Ping?s works merge a wide range of cultural references, investigating personal and general notions of home, urban transformation and global issues through the experience of daily life.

Sydney based artist Robert Nery presents his documentary narrative entitled Black Narazene entwining the artists own experiences. Nery explains ?My film is an essay on my sympathy for the culture of the crucified, and my alienation from it, on my sense of belonging to the ethos that we Christian Filipinos share and on what is expected of us in order to belong to it.?

Works from the Philippines including Homebound by Avic Ilagan and Khavn De La Cruz?s short films Greaseman, Amen and I am Batman emphasize a rich history of cinematic tradition in the Phillipines. They present new modes of working with digital media and the documentary style.

Ilagan?s piece Homebound is an exploration of the repatriation of domestic workers from Hong Kong back to the Philippines and their struggle in society. The film focuses on the idea of presenting an economic alternative and the financial and social preparation needed for their return home. Ilagan has worked with the Asian Migrant Centre since 1999 and she feels her interactions are a way to best understand the most critical issues affecting the repatriation of domestic worker. These issues are incorporated in her film as she investigates the concerns surrounding family, relationships, survival, poverty, gender and equality.

Khavn De La Cruz, one of the most active Filmmakers in the Philippines, explores the motivation of what he witnesses. In Greaseman Khavn combines a spoken word narrative, with different musical genres to follow the ?greaseman?, a modern day beggar who has lost all hope through the city streets and his dramatic encounter with a white-collar worker. This film focuses on a collision of worlds and lives as we witness the ?greaseman? taking over the worker?s life as each subject experiences the opposite side of the social and financial spectrum.

Many of the films included in this Festival take a neo-nationalist approach as they react to and observe the changes that are occurring within the region. This is evident through the ways in which contemporary artists employ both personal experiences and public events in this new digital medium to investigate their cultural identities in nationhood.
