I am a newcomer to the city of Manchester. Here, I expected to find something new about myself. Hoping to begin with a new adventure and to think in a different way, I tried to forget the way I worked before. It’s hard to explain specific reasons why I chose stone as the topic. It may just be a normal topic or it may be something that links the history and culture of the east and the west. Stone is something everyone is familiar with, or it could just be a word. For my work, stone is not the purpose, but an incentive for further discussion and a topic that helps generate good ideas from others.

In China, the phrase "to lay down the stone in heart" is often used. This means to unburden your heart, your mind and live a quality life. You have to set yourself free before you can go further. I hope I could grow in a natural way from living in a new city.

After two weeks of observation in Manchester, I was deeply impressed by so many arts events going on in this city. New ideas could come from brainstorming between different networks in the time of interaction. The game ‘rock·paper·scissors’ rang the bell in my brain. I expect my work here would start from this simple subject or word “stone” and have a game of creation with artists in Manchester. I am eager to have their participation in this game and I will respond with my new works. Ultimately all these works will be on display at Chinese Arts Centre. This is not a competition, but a game of nurturing ideas and help to keep them progressing. With the help of Chinese Arts Centre, we gradually released the basic rules and update of this game on the internet, and have received enquiries and positive feedbacks. Our work has been discussed through emails. And we exchanged ideas and visits to studios. A strange place is usually where inspiration grows from. It is always a very interesting experience to create, adjust even reject new ideas. Mr. Deng Xiaoping once said: "go across the river by probing the stones." Just like producing artworks, my life in Manchester is also the process of experiment and adjustment. The result is uncertain. You may not get ashore in the end, but the process and the feeling is so real and inspirable. Just like a Chinese saying, "Stones from other hills may serve to polish jade", I learned a lot new and gained fresh experience. Surprisingly, I realize that, this experience is the reconfirmation of some thoughts deeply rooted in my mind, as well as the discovery of my potential. I will further develop these new thoughts and take them into my work in the future. This is the greatest reward in doing this residency project.

I am so delighted to have so many artists participate in this project. These are the artworks generated by the thoughts of all artists. I am sure that the exhibition at the Chinese Arts Centre will arouse many interesting thoughts. The real game may just start from here right now. Finally, I would like to extend my gratitude to all my colleagues in the Chinese Arts Centre, for their dedicated work and kind help. It will be a cherished experience for me in Manchester.

To Be Better Than

Rock, paper, scissors (RPS) is a function known as an intransitive relation, a loop of preferences that has no beginning and no end, defying standard notions of hierarchy.

The optimal strategy is straightforward: make your throws random. If no one can guess what you're going to play, they can't devise a winning strategy against you but without extensive training humans are hopeless at this. People tend to fall into patterns. Worse, people tend to project patterns on their opponents. If you are going to win: think - but not too much. Randomise your throws, but once the game is under way, look for patterns. Your opponent works - consciously or unconsciously - with a sequence in their head. Spot it, and they are toast.

Another tip is don't throw rock in your first game. Scissors is still a good starting throw even if you are playing against someone experienced: they won't go for rock because that's seen as a rookie move, so the worst you are likely to do is tie. Once things are under way, different techniques come in. You could try the double bluff, where you tell your opponent what you're going to throw - then do it: no one believes you'll do it, so they won't play the throw that beats the throw you are playing. Then, if your mind goes blank, play the throw that would have been beaten by your opponent's previous throw: some kind of subconscious activity seems to encourage players - especially those who are not feeling at the top of their game - to aim to beat their own preceding throw.

When all else fails, the rule is "go with paper", because rock comes up more often than it would by chance. Statistically rock comes 36 per cent of plays, paper 30 per cent and scissors 34 per cent. Given people's preference for rock, it is impossible to claim that RPS is a game of chance.
