<p>史景迁序言《围城》英文版<br />朱伟一译&nbsp;&nbsp; </p><p>1937年,是中国处于水深火热的一年。多年恐吓、蚕食中国领土之后,日本终于全面开战,先是在平津地区,紧接着是在上海发动进攻。日本在华北扶植亲日政府,迅速巩固其对该地区的占领。国民党炸开黄河堤坝,力图延缓日军的进攻。但日军仍然进逼西南,意在夺取铁路中枢和水路要道武汉。 </p><p><br />  中国在淞沪一带进行了更加顽强的抵抗。双方死伤惨重。但到1937年秋末,中国军队开始溃败,防线失守,而且大多是不战而退。日军直取国民党首都南京。1937年12月,日军犯下了震惊中外的“南京暴行”,几十万中国男女老幼死于非命,幸存者痛不欲生。 </p><p><br />  1938年,日本在南京扶植亲日政权,与华北的亲日政权遥相呼应。武汉失守之后,国民党军队继续溯江而上,撤过三峡之后在四川重庆设立陪都。 </p><p><br />  山河破碎,凄风苦雨。 </p><p><br />  正是在这一历史背景之下,作为钱钟书笔下的主人公,失意潦倒的方鸿渐开始狼狈登场。方鸿渐在欧洲游学一年有余,涉猎文学和哲学,经济上有亲戚资助,生活比较闲适,遗憾的是学分修得太少。 </p><p><br />  为了有个学位,出于无奈,方鸿渐与一家骗人的函授学校接洽,弄了一张假文凭。1937方鸿渐乘坐一艘法国邮船,经新加坡回国。留学期间,方鸿渐涉猎甚广,对如何安身立命却一无所知,回国时可谓前途无望,身如飘萍。 </p><p><br />  此时方鸿渐家中二老举家逃难,从乡下到上海,住进了“租界”。上海是座大都市,租界是英、法两国势力控制的地方,日本避开租界,攻打中方控制的地区。但方鸿渐文凭是假的,既无谋生的一技之长,又没有收入来源,只好在1938年离开上海,去“三闾”教书。三闾是所没有名气的小大学,地处湖南的僻壤。此前方鸿渐从未听说过这所大学。到大学后方鸿渐在这里订婚,却不料丢掉了工作。 </p><p><br />  方鸿渐心灰意冷,在香港完婚后又回到了上海,但婚姻又开始破裂。 </p><p><br />  《围城》是一部喜剧性传奇小说,构思非常奇巧。 </p><p><br />  但凡重要的艺术作品,同时有几层意思,《围城》也不例外。从一个层面上说,《围城》有自传色彩。钱钟书同小说主人公方鸿渐一样,出身于中国的一个书香门第,1930年代去牛 和巴黎留学,1938年初回国。与方鸿渐不同的是,钱钟书是位成就斐然的学者,中、英文学方面都有很深的造诣,获得牛津大学学士学位,论文内容是17、18世纪英国文学作品中对中国的描写。但同方鸿渐一样,抗战初期钱钟书在中国内地教过书,其同事是来自上海和北平的流亡学者,在西南的昆明市合力兴办一所大学。在昆明和湖南的一所大学短期教书之后,钱钟书回到上海(1941年),在上海教书、写作,直到抗战结束。 </p><p><br />  日本袭击珍珠港之后,1941年12月占领上海租界,关押了租界内的外国人。这样一来,钱钟书生活和写作的地区由亲日的南京政权所控制。但与《围城》中的方鸿渐一样,钱钟书似乎得以独善其身。钱钟书足不出户,埋头写作研究,与妻子杨绛相守度日。杨绛是位翻译家和著名剧作家。当时钱钟书夫妇交往甚少,朋友限于不多的几位受过很好教育的中国学者和艺术家。1949年解放后,钱钟书夫妇决定留在中国大陆,并在那里度过了余生。</p><p><br />  小说的另一个层面是历史。《围城》中钱钟书很少谈到战争,没有战斗场面,没有游击队和日本人的戏剧性冲突,但小说中战争无处不在。方鸿渐和另外四人结伴,或坐公共汽车、或坐船、或步行,有时还坐轿,长途跋涉几个星期,投奔三闾大学那方净土。相关几章写得很精彩,很微妙地介绍了战乱所造成的影响。 </p><p><br />  《围城》第三个层面说的是中国知识分子,说到当时因过于推崇西方文学和美学而带来了恶果。钱钟书认为,中国的正统因此而受到侵蚀,儒家道德体系分崩离析,本来已经面临困境的中国文化更是雪上加霜。在这个问题上方鸿渐倒是无过错可言,他的谦词是自己所知甚少,对文化事宜不好妄加评论。但方鸿渐周围的朋友同事却毫无顾虑,都是些装腔作势、自命不凡的所谓学者。《围城》的某些章节说的就是这些人自吹自擂,贻笑大方。方鸿渐旅途中遇到不少人,他们很像当时文学界和学界的某些角色。但钱钟书自己在小说前言中恳请读者不要把《围城》当作一部影射小说。 </p><p><br />  还有一个层面,说的是男女之间的关系,谈及性和婚姻。方鸿渐有相思之苦,其罗曼史又总是阴错阳差。这方面的描写非常精彩,虽然带有讽刺,读了还是让人很是惆怅。小说最后五十页左右写了婚姻的失败,其表现水平之高,各种语言的文学作品中能够写到这样的不多。</p><p>  有位文学评论家指出,钱钟书对婚姻如此悲观,应该是在牛津求学期间读了大量英国小说的缘故,尤其是伊夫利·沃(Evelyn Waugh)和奥尔德斯·赫胥黎(Aldous Huxley)两位作家对他有很大影响。这位评论家的观点不无道理。另外,还有一点可能也有关系:钱钟书写《围城》时,他在上海有位关系很近的朋友,是研究福楼拜的专家。当时这位朋友正在翻译《包法利夫人》和《情感教育》。不过,我们同时也必须看到,恋爱关系有始无终,方鸿渐优柔寡断,受到家庭各种压力,这些方面的细节描写显然都绝对是中国特色的。</p><p>&nbsp;  最后,或许也是最败兴的,从第一页开始,《围城》总离不开令人作呕的形象。人体——不光是方鸿渐的人体——通过口鼻而一再出错。晕船、晕机、晕车、吐酒、婴儿流口水,还有鼻涕。遇到这些描写,读者也奈何不得,只能往下读。或许有人会说,这些描写可能是受乔纳森·斯威夫特(Jonathan Swift)的影响。也许确实如此,在现代文学和英国18世纪文学方面,钱钟书都是当之无愧的专家。钱钟书的这些描写倒还不仅仅是为了讽刺,他似乎是执意提醒我们,人的纯洁可望而不可及,我们的诗情画意到头来总是弄巧成拙,适得其反。 </p><p>  《围城》1947年第一次出版。他完成了一部有创造力的小说,机智、富有灵性,而又不乏真善。《围城》无疑是20世纪中国文学的杰作,即便从全球范围来看,也是一部立于不败的作品。《围城》的英文版已经很久没有面世了。 </p><p>  新方向出版公司做了件好事,帮助此书与新读者见面。或许《围城》无法告诉我们今天的中国正往何处去,但《围城》肯定可以告诉我们中国所历经的沧桑。<br roman'">当我们走进礼堂时,我们期待的是什么?欣赏另一种文化中的传统诗歌需要艰苦的努力,无论是想象中的、还是现实里的国际观众,通常都会被这种辛苦吓倒。与此同时,国际观众也不想看没有一点国家或民族痕迹的诗。他们希望诗歌代表其他的国家和文化。他们想在一种本质上熟悉、易读的诗歌中,寻找地方色彩和地域问题;他们期待的是舒适的民族风味。如果上述属实,那么,作为国际观众,我们必须意识到,这个来自另一片土地、另一种文化的诗人的写作,至少有一部分是为了我们,至少有一部分是为了满足他想象当中我们的需要。他的诗歌语言是在阅读我们的诗歌的过程中形成的。本土诗人通过阅读西方诗歌的翻译,有时候是很差的翻译,创造了他们的“新诗”—无论是中国新诗、印度新诗、或者日本新诗。这也就是说,身为国际读者中的英美或者欧洲成员,我们阅读的是从我们自己的诗歌遗产之译本所衍生出来的诗歌之译本。如果真象俗话所说,诗是翻译过程中丧失了的东西,上面谈到“世界诗歌”的形成,真是一种极为令人困扰的状况。</span><span 写这种文章,史景迁显然与宇文所安不在一个层面上。只能述其大概,而不会深及要害。……钱钟书的那个翻译福楼拜的朋友,应该是李健吾了。。。
