译</b></p><p>斯蒂文森在1882年说过,英国读者已不屑于情节小说;而英国读者则认为斯蒂文森很擅长写无情节或非情节小说。何塞·契尔特加·伊·加塞特(《艺术的非人性化》,1925)也曾试图阐释斯蒂文森所说的对于小说情节的这种漠然态度。他在《艺术的非人性化》第98页上下结论说;“时至今日,令人感奋的故事已经掘尽。”他继而(在第97页)又说:“小说再也不可能以情节取胜。”他还在其他地方,用大量篇幅阐述他的这一观点,他说未来的小说是“心理”小说,认为一切冒险的幻想或幻想的冒险都将是缺乏新意的和索然无味的。这种观点风行一时,至少是在1882年、l925年甚至勿庸置疑地还有1940年。然而,有人却对此大不以为然(在这些大不以为然的人中有阿多尔福·比奥伊·卡萨雷斯一个)。而他们不是没有道理的。下面就让我来说说他们的理由吧。 </p><p>首先,情节小说具有严谨的内在结构(当然也免不了会有自相矛盾的地方,对此我既不想夸张也不想淡化)。典型的“心理”小说却显得比较紊乱。俄国作家及其追随者们已经反复证明:幻想是没有止境的。因为太幸福而自尽,由于太仁慈而杀人;因为相爱而永远分离, 由于友情太诚实而告发朋友……凡此种种是情节小说的幻想的自由,它们尽可以抵消“心理”小说的紊乱的自由。其次,“心理”小说并没有放弃成为“观实主义”小说的企图;“心理”小说家因此避而不谈语言的假设性特征,而极力赋予了含混(极度的含混)以精确性和可信性。有些章节,譬如马塞尔·普鲁斯特的某些章节,简直令人难以接受,看到那些地方,就好比回味平日里无所事事的无聊。情节小说则不同,情节小说通常是作为现实的再现而不允许虚构的对象有半点马虎的。为了不拾人牙慧,不重复《金驴》、《辛巴达航海旅行记》或《堂吉诃德》的动人故事和冒险经历,情节小说必须有新的、严谨的情节。 </p><p>这是就小说艺术特征而言的。此外,从经验的角定着,人们都懊丧地说我们这个世纪将难以创造出动人心弦的故事,以至于谁也不敢贸然试笔,用新的故事去超越前人。的确,斯蒂文森比切斯特顿理智得多、尖锐得多、激昂得多,当然也易披人接受得多。然而,就情节而言,斯蒂文森的作品就不免相形见绌、黯然失色了。同样,狄更斯尽可以沉溺于他精心构织的恐怖之夜和迷宫般的心境,但在表述unutterable and seIf-repeating infinities【不可言喻又缠绵悱恻】内心感触时,比类似的卡夫卡寓言要逊色得多。奥尔特加·伊·加塞特说得好, 巴尔扎克的“心理”描写不尽如人意。其实巴氏小说的故事情节又何尝不是如此。还有莎士比亚和塞万提斯,他们都曾热衷于女扮男装的故事,而且一经他们妙笔点化,少女虽姿色不减然能以假乱真。只不过在我们看来,这早已不是什么奇迹。我并不迷信现代性,也决不厚今薄古地去断言今天同昨天或明天同今天的区别,但却坚信任何过去的时代也没能像今天这样创造出令人叹为观止的故事情节,如《拧螺丝》、《审判》、《大地上的旅行者》和这部由阿多尔福·比奥伊·卡萨雷斯在布宜诺斯艾利斯创作的小说。</p><p>侦探小说(本世纪另一种长于情节的体栽)讲的也是些令人叹服的既神秘又可信的故事。阿多尔福·比奥伊·卡萨雷斯在本书的字里行尖幸运地解决了这样一个难题:用幻觉、幻想和象征(而不是超现实的假定)谱写了一部新的、充满奇迹的《奥德赛》。慑于有可能以偏盖全,我禁止自己对小说的情节及其充满睿智的结构和细节进行评骛。我只想说比奥伊艺术地超越了奥里杰内斯、圣阿古斯丁和路易斯·奥古斯特·布朗基思考的问题,革新了丹特·加布里耶尔·罗塞蒂用令人难忘的诗吟诵的观念: </p><p>I have been here before,<br />  But when or ho w I cannot tell:<br />  I know the grass beyond the door,<br />  Thg sweet keen smell,<br />  The sighing sound,the lights aroune the shore……。</p><p>西班牙语文学中,还少有理性的幻想作品:我们的古典作家擅长比喻和讽刺性夸张,偶尔也搞过文学游戏,但却没有给我们留下多少脍炙人口的故事;近现代情况更糟,我所记得的只有《神秘的力量》和圣地亚哥·达波维的个别作品(可惜他们鲜为人知)。《雷莫尔的发明》(这个题目使人联想起另一个海岛发明家——莫罗)给我们的大陆、我们的语言文学带来了新的希望。</p><p>在同本书作者议论了所有细节之后,我以为用完美这两个字来评价这部作品将不会过分。</p><p><b>【节选自《莫雷尔的发明》,兔兔录入】</b></p><p></p></td></tr><tr
