房龙在《宽容》中描述的罗马人,类似这些理性人和实用主义者(我们现实中常见的那些令人厌恶的还达不到罗马人水准):
The Romans felt that they could do without the preliminary study. They were merely indifferent, and were proud of fact. They were interested in practical things. They were men of action and had a deep-seated contempt for words.
If other people wished to spend their afternoons underneath an old olive tree, discussing the theoretical aspects of government or the influnence of the moon upon the tides, they were more than welcome to do so.
If furthermore their knowledge could be turned to some practical use, then it was worthy of further attention.…………………………
